Backyard Field Hockey Turf Features
✅ Cut to the Space You Actually Have
Few gardens are shaped like a regulation pitch, so we cut to the measurements you send over. An awkward side return or a narrow strip between the shed and the fence can still take a surface, and you are not paying for turf that ends up trimmed off and thrown away.
✅ Short Pile for a Truer Ball
A 10–15 mm pile keeps the ball riding on the surface instead of burying itself in the fibre. That matters more in a small garden than on a full pitch - when you repeat the same receiving or drag-flick drill fifty times, you want the ball reacting the same way every time.
✅ Drains After Rain
A private pitch gets used when somebody has a free hour, not when the weather cooperates. Drainage holes through the backing drop water into the base below rather than leaving it to pool on top, so the surface is back in play sooner and the seams stay flat.
✅ Soft Enough for Bare Feet
Club surfaces are built for boots. This one also gets used in socks, in bare feet, and by younger players who spend as much time on the ground as standing up. The PP fibre is free of lead and heavy metals, and it holds its colour through several summers of direct sun.

Where a Backyard Hockey Pitch Gets Used
Practice Surfaces for Homes, Schools and Small Clubs

Family Gardens
Somewhere the kids can repeat the drills they were shown at training, without turning the lawn behind the house into mud by the middle of winter.
School Grounds
A small pitch tucked beside the main field lets a junior squad rotate through stations instead of queueing for one surface.
Shared Garden Surfaces
One area that takes hockey in the week and football at the weekend - most households want more than a single sport out of the same square metres.
Private Coaching
Coaches running one-to-one or small-group sessions from home need a surface that behaves the same in week one and in week twenty.

What Goes Underneath a Garden Pitch
Most pitches that disappoint do it because of the ground beneath them, not the roll on top. Sorting the base first is the difference between a surface that lasts and one that ripples after the first winter.
Base Preparation
Whether you start from soil, an old patio or a compacted aggregate base, the layer under the turf has to be flat, firm and free of anything that will move later. A base that settles unevenly shows up as dips within a season.
Drainage
Water needs somewhere to go. Perforations in the backing pass it down to the sub-base, which then has to carry it away - check where the run-off actually ends up before you lay, particularly on clay.
Joining and Edging
Seams are the part that fails first on a small pitch. Join the rolls on a dry, settled day and finish the perimeter with a fixed edge, so the turf cannot lift at the corners where players push off.
Day-to-Day Care
Little and often. Brush the pile back up against the direction it leans, clear leaves before they break down into the backing, and rinse off mud rather than letting it dry into the fibre.

FAQ
1. How much space does a backyard hockey pitch need?
There is no minimum we insist on. A strip around 10 m by 5 m already handles passing, receiving and shooting drills, and we cut to whatever measurements you send. If you want running drills as well, extra length helps more than extra width.
2. Can the turf be laid straight onto soil?
It can, but we would not recommend it without a prepared base. Topsoil and grass move, and the surface above follows them. A compacted aggregate base, or an existing concrete or paved area, gives a far more stable result over time.
3. Does a home pitch need watering?
Not the way a competition field does. Water-based pitches are wetted to control friction at match pace. For garden practice, a hose over the surface on a hot afternoon is plenty, and plenty of owners never water it at all.
