The History of Artificial Grass For Soccer

In the 1950s, the concept of synthetic turf was born to improve the physical fitness of urban youth and evolved into a specialized industry. The Ford Foundation's Educational Facilities Laboratory partnered with Monsanto and Chemstrand to promote the use of synthetic fiber carpeting in schools.

Between 1962 and 1966, Chemstrand's research team conducted detailed tests to evaluate the drainage, resistance and durability of synthetic turf.

In 1964, Chemgrass was laid for the first time on a large scale at the Moses Brown School in Providence, Rhode Island.

In 1965, Houston's Astrodome turned to Monsanto for a solution when the local environment was unsuitable for natural grass and decided to install Chemgrass synthetic grass.

In 1966, the Houston Astros began their season on Chemgrass, which was subsequently renamed "Astros Turf.

On July 25, 1967, Astro Turf was trademarked and patented. That same year, Indiana State University installed artificial turf in its outdoor stadium, and in the 1970s, several stadiums in the U.S. and Canada followed suit.

In the mid-1970s, the second generation of "plush turf" was introduced, using a softer polypropylene material for sports such as field hockey. Soccer, however, lagged a bit behind. It wasn't until the mid-1990s that the third generation of artificial turf appeared, using softer polyethylene fibers, wider fiber spacing, the addition of "dead grass" yarns, and an even distribution of infill on the underside to improve comfort and grip.
